It all started with a simple question: what if audio stories could be different every time you listen?
The idea behind Voctale was born from a passion for storytelling and the frustration with a format – the traditional audiobook – that, however fascinating, remains a passive experience. The listener follows a linear path, with no choice, no influence on the story.
The inspiration
Choose-your-own-adventure books from the 80s and 90s taught us something fundamental: stories are more engaging when the reader participates. That concept, combined with the exponential growth of the audiobook market, sparked the idea.
Imagine listening to a thriller where, at the crucial moment, you decide whether the protagonist enters the dark room or calls the police. Each choice opens a different narrative branch, with dedicated audio scenes, until reaching one of multiple possible endings.
From vision to platform
Building Voctale meant facing unique technical challenges. How to manage a branching narrative structure? How to allow authors to easily create non-linear stories? How to ensure a smooth listening experience despite choice points?
The answer was an architecture based on scenes and choices: each audiobook is composed of audio scenes linked together through decision points. The listener navigates the story by making choices that determine which scene plays next.
For authors, with authors
Voctale is not just a platform for listeners. It is an ecosystem for authors and creators who want to explore new forms of storytelling. The author panel allows building interactive stories visually, managing audio scenes, defining choice points, and publishing directly on the platform.
Multilingual from day one
In an increasingly connected world, we chose to make Voctale multilingual from the start. Italian, English, and French are the first supported languages, with plans to expand progressively. Every story can be translated and adapted for different markets.
The future
We are just getting started. Next steps include payment integration, advanced analytics for authors, a smart recommendation system, and – why not – the possibility of creating collaborative stories where multiple authors contribute to different narrative branches.
