Biography
Giovanni Verga was born in Catania in 1840. The leading figure of Italian verismo, he portrayed the lives of Sicilian fishermen and peasants in a plain language close to everyday speech. He is the author of The House by the Medlar Tree and Mastro-don Gesualdo, and of the stories in Life in the Fields, including Cavalleria rusticana. He died in Catania in 1922.
